DIY Patio Chairs
I’ve had these chairs completed since Christmas, but decided to share it this Spring in case any of you are in search of new patio furniture. It’s a simple plan from Ana White and these are some seriously heavy and sturdy chairs. The best part is that they don’t cost much at all to make since the plan uses all 2x4s and 2x6s. Straight cuts all the way.
Here are the details of this plan:
4 – 2×4 @ 8 feet long
4 – 2×6 @ 8 feet long
2-3/4″ self tapping deck screws
25″ x 25″ seat cushion (Mine came from Target!)
Exterior Glue
Stain – Rustoleum Briarsmoke
Man O War Marine Sealant
CUT LIST PER ONE CHAIR (DESIGNED TO FIT 25″ x 25″ CUSHION)
4 – 2×4 @ 22-1/4″ – Legs
6 – 2×6 @ 28-1/2″ – Side Slats
2 – 2×4 @ 31-1/2″ – Arm Rests
4 – 2×6 @ 25″ – Front and Back Slats
2 – 2×4 @ 25″ – Front Top Slat and Back Top
2 – 2×2 @ 25-1/2″ – Inside Cleat
5 – 2×4 @ 25″ – Seat Slats
During the busy Christmas Season I completely forgot to take photos of how I did this, so I’m basically writing this to tell you how much money you can save building vs. buying. They’ll most likely be better quality too! If you’ve never visited Ana White’s website (link at the top), get ready to get lost for hours looking at all the amazing things you can make! My husband and I have built so many pieces of furniture from her plans, mainly because they are so straight-forward and easy to follow.
When we built these chairs, I cut all the boards to size and then we each assembled a chair, so it went really fast. Since they’re 2x4s and 2x6s it did require a lot of sanding and in hindsight, I should have sanded the boards prior to assembling them, but whatever, sometimes I just get too excited and want to put it all together! However, I think the staining and sealing process is what took the longest! Waiting for the Man O War outdoor sealant stuff to dry before the next coat takes forever!!!
The only minor change we made was to the slats. We decided to lower them so the cushion, which is 5 inches thick, was just about level with the top of the front of the chair. My husband and I are tall people and the placement of the slats felt too high, which made the arm rests and the back of the chair feel too low. Hard to explain unless you sit in them. At any rate, we are so pleased with the look and function of them! They are so heavy that there’s no worry about a strong wind carrying them off into the yard, haha. Hope you like them too!
Is the shopping list for 2 chairs?
I just made these chairs. Your chairs turned out great! I am wondering where you got the cushions. I love the cushions you picked out!
