DIY Tool Storage Boxes
I needed some extra tool storage in our garage for extra items that we bought for our bathroom reno. So instead of buying an additional tool chest, I decided to make my own portable DIY tool storage boxes.
I wanted tool storage that would also keep dust and grime out. These clear storage boxes were perfect; they aren’t very tall so they don’t take up a lot of vertical space when stacked.
I also wanted them to have a non-slip interior liner to prevent the tools from banging around inside the boxes (like the liners made for a normal toolbox drawer), but I didn’t want to purchase a large roll of professional toolbox drawer liner. I found this version at Target by Contact brand and it was much less than the traditional tool drawer liner sold at the bog box home improvement stores.
I traced the exterior edge of the boxes to get a perfect fit for the drawer liner and cut out the shape using regular household scissors.
To ensure that the drawer liner wouldn’t shift or curl inside the boxes, I glued them in place with a hot glue gun. The boxes have a nice ridge around the inside edge, which made a perfect groove for the hot glue.
Once they were both glued into place I put all of our plumbing supplies into each box based on the appropriate category (sorting like with like, of course!).
Can I say these tools look pretty? Lol, YES. I love how pretty they look in these organized little boxes!
The liner mimics the perforated leather in my car (IMO), which makes it feel a little more luxurious. 🙂
I used red duct tape to make a durable, garage-friendly label for each box. I labeled the top of the boxes, as well as the shorter ends, so the label can be read from above or when the boxes are stacked.
These boxes have already proved to be convenient. Whenever we need plumbing tools all we have to do is go pick up the appropriate box and they can easily be carried to where we need to use them without having to make several trips to the garage. Simple, cheap, and organized. My favorite kind of weekend project!

Having everything where you need it to be always makes working on a project more pleasant. This is so much better than making dozens of trips back out to the garage for tools.
What a great idea to use the liner. It’s odd, but tools all nice & organized make my heart go pitter patter 🙂
Thanks ladies. It was a very easy and quick project, but it helps us function so much better. 🙂
Those are some great boxes.
Thank you Yael!
Super handy to have everything all together like that! thanks for sharing them with SYC.
